How to Apply for a Social Security Number (SSN)
Fill out the downloadable form below and bring ALL the necessary documents.
Requirements for NATURAL BORN Marshallese citizens
Bring the required documents together with any additional documents listed below:
- (Required) Birth certificate with the seal from the Ministry of Internal affairs
- (Required) Original Marshallese passport
- Original ID card issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs
- Valid driver’s license, or
- Vaccination card issued by the Ministry of Health
Requirements for NATURALIZED Marshallese citizens
Bring the required documents together with any additional documents listed below:
- (Required) Original Marshallese passport
- Naturalization certificate from the AG’s Office
- Identification card for Marshallese citizens issued by the Department of Internal Affairs
Bring ANY of the following documents:
- Birth certificate
- Valid passport (original)
Bring ALL of the following documents:
- Original valid passport
- Valid entry permit from the Immigration Office
- Valid alien registration certificate from the Immigration Office
- Valid working permit from the Labor Office
- Valid employment contract, if applicant is an employee
- Certification from the sponsor, if applicant is a missionary
Bring ALL of the following documents:
- Original Passport
- Any proof of being a volunteer
Bring ALL of the following documents:
- Valid original passport
- Marshallese diplomatic visa or embassy certificate
Other Notes
Exemptions from work permit
- RMI government employees (under PSC) are exempted from the work permit required by the Labor Office.
For students
- For foreign students, proof of school attendance is required, aside from the above documents.
- Dependents of non-resident workers who are students enrolled in Marshallese schools may be given social security numbers, but have to present proof of enrollment.
Citizenships
- If applicant claims to be a half-Marshallese or related to a Marshallese, his or her citizenship shall be based on what passport he or she carries.
Issuance of social security number
- If applicant claims that his or her work permit, entry permit and alien registration are not yet available (still being processed), no social security number shall be issued unless there is a written confirmation from the Labor and Immigration Offices.
- No SS number shall be issued if the entry permit or alien registration certificate shows that the applicant is a dependent, even if the applicant is already issued a valid work permit by the Labor Office.
- No social security number shall be issued to dependents of non-resident workers who are not legally authorized to work in the Marshall Islands.

- SSN Replacement ($10 per card) Retirees are exempted from this fee.
