Please join us in congratulating Adrian Joe and Almitha Mckay on their promotion to Tax Compliance & Audit Manager and Assistant Tax Compliance & Audit Manager positions, respectively.
ADRIAN JOE – Tax Compliance & Audit Manager
Adrian joined MISSA in April 2019 as a Tax Auditor, a staff-level position. His potential to be a leader was easily noted and recognized as early as his second year with the Administration when he was promoted to Tax Audit Supervisor. Shortly after the promotion, his immediate superior (Tax Audit Manager) left MISSA due to medical reasons, leaving a leadership vacuum in the Tax Audit team. Nevertheless, Adrian considered it as a challenge as he proved that leadership transcends the title level. He did not wait on a promotion to hone and sharpen his managerial skills — he believes that “it’s better to have them before he needs them”. As the new head of his team of tax auditors, Adrian was able to fill that vacuum effectively for two years until his recent promotion to Tax Compliance & Audit Manager.
Adrian received a Certificate IV in Accounting (equivalent to an associate degree) from the University of the South Pacific, Majuro Campus in 2018.
It is noteworthy to mention that since the Tax Audit Department was created in 2004, MISSA’s Tax Auditors have completed hundreds of payroll audits that resulted to MISSA collecting around $6-7 million worth of tax deficiencies from unreported and under-reported wages.
ALMITHA MCKAY- Assistant Tax Compliance & Audit Manager
Almitha brings with her 23 years of experience in customer service, treasury and tax compliance, 8 years of which are in supervisorial capacity, all with MISSA. Her career with the Aministration started in 2000 as a Receptionist & Data Technician. Shortly, she was given a higher responsibility when she was re-assigned as a cashier. In 2002, her position level was again upgraded to Tax Officer and she steadily rose from the ranks to become a Tax Compliance Supervisor in 2015.
Almitha graduated with an Associate degree in Liberal Arts from the College of the Marshall Islands in 1999.
MISSA’s Tax Compliance Department have consistently met its target of collecting at least 88% of taxes due every quarter. This high collection rate is the result of the team’s relentless and aggressive collection campaign that include legal referrals and prosecutions.
Congratulations on this well-deserved promotion, Adrian and Almitha! We look forward to your continued success with the Administration! You have always been significant contributors to MISSA’s accomplishments.
